Hair Removal
Electrolysis
The only method of permanent hair removal, and it works on any hair color and any skin tone. A fine probe treats one follicle at a time, so the result lasts.
How It Works
Electrolysis treats hair one follicle at a time. A fine probe slips alongside the hair and delivers a small, controlled current that disables the follicle's ability to grow. It is the only method the FDA recognizes as permanent, and it has been in use for over a century.
Because it works on the follicle rather than the pigment in the hair, electrolysis treats hair that laser cannot: gray, red, blonde, and fine hair all respond, on any skin tone. If laser was not an option for you, or did not finish the job, this usually is.
Electrolysis or Laser?
Both last far longer than shaving or waxing. Laser is faster over large areas but only targets darker hair, and it usually needs periodic maintenance. Electrolysis is permanent and works regardless of hair or skin color, but it treats one follicle at a time, so it takes more sessions. At a consultation we will tell you honestly which one fits your hair, your skin, and the area you want treated.
What to Expect
How long the full course takes depends on the area, your hair growth, hormones, and any medications. Hair grows in cycles, so clearing an area for good takes a series of sessions over time. For many clients that runs over several months; we will give you a realistic picture at your consultation rather than a number that just sounds good on a page.
Some temporary redness or tenderness right after a session is normal and settles quickly.
Hair Removal as Part of Gender Transition
Permanent hair removal is often an important part of gender-affirming care, and electrolysis is the one method that clears hair of any color. We have written about how we approach this on our transgender care page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is electrolysis really permanent?
Yes. Electrolysis is the only hair-removal method the FDA recognizes as permanent, because it disables the follicle itself. It is safe for all skin tones and works on any hair color, including the gray, blonde, and red hair that laser cannot treat.
How is it different from laser hair removal?
Laser targets the pigment in the hair, so it is faster on large areas but only works on darker hair and usually needs maintenance over time. Electrolysis works on the follicle directly, so it is permanent and works on any hair and skin color, but it treats one follicle at a time and takes more sessions.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on the area, your hair growth, and factors like hormones and medication. Because hair grows in cycles, a full course runs as a series of sessions over several months. We will map out a realistic plan at your consultation.
Does it hurt?
Most people find it very manageable. The sensation depends on the area and your skin, and keeping you comfortable is part of how we plan your sessions. Tell us if anything is too much and we will adjust.
Are there side effects?
Some temporary redness or tenderness in the treated area right afterward is normal and usually settles within a few hours.
